Okay let's come back from la-la land.
I always have SOMETHING to say!
Life has been busy.
I'm extremely busy learning new songs for church.
Some I like, some I'm not too sure about.
This Sunday is one that we'll just have to wait and see how it turns out.
Let's just say I'm having a hard time learning these songs!
And here's my THOUGHT for the day...
What's wrong with the old songs?
You know, the ones that speak of God's grace and love for us?
The ones that mention the blood of Jesus cleansing us from our sins?
Not that I don't like the new ones.
It's just that some of them are a little too focused on "Me" instead of on "Jesus."
And isn't that what worship is suppose to be about?
I can't help but notice as I'm sitting there playing the piano on
Sunday mornings...
Sunday nights...
Wednesday nights...
Okay, I'm the only piano player for the moment in our church.
But really, I can't help but notice that when we sing the older songs, our worship becomes alive. Our worship becomes more focused on the saving grace and power of our Lord.
So I'm off to learn 5 new songs for Sunday, yes 5!
What are your thoughts on this subject?

My hubby is always saying the same thing. What's wrong with the old steadfast songs. Not that we don't like some of the new ones but some are very repetitious and don't focus on Jesus. Just our point of view.

I like the combination of songs that our church sings. I like the new ones- well most of them- but I agree that the old ones really bring our thoughts and hearts back to Jesus. I love it when songs are arranged to sing the old and new together- the meaning really comes through:)

I truely love the old songs. The contemporary songs are good but the old songs are great.... More meat on the bones.

Our church does a mixture of both old and new and I love them equally. I personally don't think any of the new songs we sing focus on "me". Two of my favorite new songs are "The Revelation Song" and "Above All" (which is very focused on Jesus!)
All music that glorifies and praises the Lord is precious to me!
I love the traditional old songs! They are the ones that truly speak to me.
I love the older hymns too, the new ones are good, but the old ones really touch me. Most of them have wonderful stories behind how they where written,too , many by folks fearing for their lives for being christians, . The fact they had such faith to write the words to praise our savior is so moving to me.
I love the old hymns too -- I started playing some Kids Praise CDs with hymns just so my son can learn them. It's a shame they aren't exposed to them in church like we used to be.
What are the new songs that you are learning?
I agree it seems like when they sing the older ones the congregation comes alive and really gets into it. When the new ones are played it seems more mellow.
The church needs to have both so that it keeps the younger ones coming.

We only sing the older hymns at our chuch. Then our Choir sings regular camp meeting revival type songs.....Why bother with some of the "new" ones....seems like im at a rock show. Try this,it is some of the songs our choir sings...love it.

Amen to that! I'm sure there are some newer hymns that are fine, but I personally prefer the older ones as well. To me, it's as if the newer ones are "trying too hard". The lyrics just don't measure up to the older hymns. I don't mean to make a blanket statement, but the older ones are my favorite.
And as far as placing focus on anything or anyone but Jesus Christ...Amen, Amen, Amen to what you said!!
I'm with you, I love the old ones! They still bring a tear to my eye when I'm singing them! Not so much with some of the newer ones. If I have a choice between a contemporary service or a regular service, I'll skip the contemporary one! Have a great evening! Hugs, Loretta

This is my first visit to you blog,but as someone who became a Christian late in life I really wish there were more of the old hymns .I missed out on them and they are so amazing ,so moving and thought provoking .
I love praise and worship but not being raised in church you notice the lack of respect ,wonder and awe
missing in some of the newer music.
The other thing I notice are all the familiar notes and similar words and phrases of modern secular music.
It is hard to seperate them at times.
I am not saying there should never be new worship songs .
I am saying don't throw the baby out with the bath water .
You know if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Anyway I hope you didn't mind my two cents worth.

Hi Sweetie! I, too, am a lover of the old hymns, but prefer a balance between old and new! I don't think either should be left out! Talk it out with the worship leader and the pastor. Maybe the whole church is feeling the same way!
As far as stealing the pic, I'm assuming you're talking about the "Thank You, Friends" one, and yes you can use it as you wish!! I am having fun with graphics, so I may occasionally offer free stuff like this.

That's one thing I love about our church....they mix new and old hymns. I feel like there is such a sacredness with the older hymns too! I do like some of the new ones too!
However, I don't like learning a bunch of new songs to play on the piano either....I guess I just am not patient enough and don't have the time these days!

The old hymns are like comfort food, per se. Some of the newer ones are good as well-I'm not opposed to ccm. I think they both have a time and place, and that the important thing is that the majority of the congregation is able to enjoy the music. If that means blended worship, or offering a contemporary service and a traditional service, then so be it.

I really love the old hymns! I am so glad that our church sings them. Our youth pastor is young (22 yrs old) and once a month on Sunday night he plays his guitar and we sing choruses from the newer praise and worship songs. It seems like a nice balance for me, but not sure how everyone else feels. :o) One of my very favorite hymns is "In The Garden." What is yours?

You are so right!! I agree 100% with you. There is nothing wrong with the old songs--they have a special message to them that the new songs do not have.

I am with you girl...I like the older songs!
I'm just back from Bible camp where we always learn new songs. I like them. But, there is something comforting and encouraging about the "old" songs. They take me back to my childhood, listening to my grandfather sing, and leading my first song at church at age 12 ("Anywhere He Leads Me"). I like my kids to learn and know the old songs because it connects generations of worshipers. Good post.
